I once heard that cooking is the only art that employs all five senses: taste, touch, smell, sound and sight.
I don’t remember who it was that told me this and in what context, but it stuck.
I truly think that there is something beautiful about preparing food- utilizing all the methods of perception that humans have been equipped with.
Below is the recipe for a smoothie bowl I made the other day.
While I was preparing it, I became so aware of the process and all that was involved that I sort of lost myself in it.
It was almost like sensory overload…
The smoothie itself was delicious. And if I may, the bowl quite aesthetically pleasing as well!
Five Senses Smoothie Bowl
For the smoothie:
- 2 frozen bananas
- 1 carrot
- 1 orange
- 2 nectarines
- ½ cup coconut water
- 1 tbsp Manuka honey (or dates or maple syrup if strict vegan)
- 1 1-inch piece of fresh turmeric root
For the toppings:
- fresh blueberries
- shelled hemp seeds
- apple slices
- sliced celery sticks
- goji berries
- fresh flowers (make sure they are edible flowers if you plan to eat them!)
- Blend, decorate, serve and enjoy!
