Basil Smoothie
I’ve always thought of basil as an addition to a dish…something to garnish with, or a flavor enhancer. Moreover, basil has always been something added to savory food. Not sweet. So when I opened my fridge this morning and saw a huge vat of basil (that I was going to use for pesto- but didn’t end up making), I thought “why not?” Let’s make a basil smoothie. So that’s what I did. I made a basil smoothie. I added chia seeds for extra superfood goodness and dates and strawberries for sweetness. It was actually very fresh. Delicious indeed.
And basil, btw, is chock-full of incredible nutrients. To name a few:
- DNA protection
- Anti-Bacterial properties
- Vitamins K, A, C, calcium, iron, manganese, copper, folate, magnesium
- Surprisingly it also has Omega 3 fatty acids
- Anti-inflammatory effects
- Aids in cardiovascular health
So, in short: eat more basil. And if you are brave enough (and trust me at all), try it in a smoothie!
